ASCENSION

Information

This sculpture is a visual and conceptual reflection on contemporary identity.
Three symbolic figures – “Responsibility,” “Freedom,” and “Identity” – intertwine in a
fragile and profound balance, between guidance, imposition, and aspiration.
“Responsibility,” sculpted in veined white marble, has a mature face, marked
by time. She holds a newborn in her arms: new life entrusted to experience. Her
foot treads on some golden tesserae of the central figure, symbolizing the weight of
the past that spills into the future. She is strong but not divine, human, imperfect, real.
“Freedom” is an androgynous and otherworldly entity, completely bald, with her body
etched with esoteric signs and symbols, resembling a lost script. Her eyes are
closed, listening to something deeper. She holds a book open upwards,
as if it were an inner light, knowledge that does not impose but inspires.
“Identity,” in the center, is a body fragmented into golden tesserae. She is kneeling,
engrossed in the attempt to recompose herself. Her reflective material blends with the
surface of the smoked mirror on which the whole scene rests. The reflection is broken,
distorted, like the perception we often have of ourselves. What is seen is
part of the truth, part of the desired, part of the judged.
The mirrored base is not just support: it is part of the work, inviting the
viewer to reflect within that unfinished process, to wonder where their
identity ends and where their masks begin.
The entire work stages the eternal conflict between what we would like to be (Freedom)
and what we feel obliged to be (Responsibility), while our Identity is
built, lost, recomposed.
It is a symbolic ascension, imperfect, arduous, and beautiful, where every fragment brings us
closer – or further away – from our essence.
Etched into Freedom's skull, in an alien (invented) language, a spiritual koan-like phrase
awaits deciphering:
“no form, no time – no light, no shadow – no roots, no ties – no beginning, no end
– I, ALL”
A metaphysical declaration.
A possibility for everyone.
An invitation to self-reflection.
